Living with Construction

With the blossoming population in many urban areas, it is
almost a given that when you venture around town to commute
or to perform your errands, you will come across at least
one type of construction project or another. It can be
very frustrating to have to wait in traffic because a lane
or two of traffic may be blocked in order to widen the roads
or make repairs or other improvements. It is hard to think
about the fact that the setbacks now will lead to more
efficient travel and lifestyles in the future. Construction
not only means growth, it also means jobs and an improved
economy. If an area is growing that is a good sign that
the economy it that area is growing as well.

Driving around town can be especially frustrating when there
are construction problems. If you live in a high growth
area with lots of car traffic, road construction can really
snarl up the commute. If this is your situation you need to
try to remain calm and in control of your emotions. Traffic
problems can make an already stressful day seem that much
more so. Don't rush. Just take a deep breath and take it
as slowly and safely as the situation calls for. Plan ahead
if possible to allow yourself extra time. Find alternate
routes that you can take. Speeding or driving erraticly
through a construction zone is not only dangerous, it is
also illegal and you could find yourself slapped with a
fine. There are special laws for construction zones
designed to protect you, the other drivers, and the workers.

In newer residential areas, you will probably see a lot of
housing construction. The vacant lots that may have been
covered with weeds or the old farms and orchards are being
plowed under to make room for new homes, apartments, and
families. This can be dusty, noisy, and inconvenient. Be
patient and remember that at one point the home you live in
was new construction as well.

When commercial construction of shopping centers, sports
arenas or office buildings is involved, you will see even
bigger trucks and equipment, including cranes, bulldozers
and other large vehicles. Use extra caution to avoid the
equipment and workers who are working on these sites. They
are just trying to do their jobs and they want to get them
done safely and quickly as well.

As cities continue to grow, so will the number of
construction sites. No matter where you live, construction
is a sign of continued growth. Although it is sometimes an
inconvenience, it is important to remember that growth is
good for our economy, and keeping your cool while dealing
with growth and the resulting construction is a must.
Always remember to exhibit caution around a construction
zone, as the construction workers are putting their lives
on the line in busy areas every day so we can enjoy the
fruits of their labors. Respecting their safety by driving
at safe speeds through any kind of construction zone is
crucial in keeping everyone safe.
